The municipalities are cities directly governed by the Central Government. They are 北京 (bei3jing1, capital of China), 上海 (shang4hai3), 天津 (tian1jin1) and 重庆 (chong2qing4).

The two SARs are 香港 (xiang1gang3, Hong Kong) and 澳门 (ao4men2, Macao).

The Autonomous Regions are places where a lot of people from the same ethnical minority groups are living together and are given regional autonomy of their own. The five ARs are:
